Rowland Hilder was a British landscape artist and book illustrator. Born on June 28, 1905 in Great Neck, NY, his English father moved the family to Kent, England in 1915 where his natural talent for drawing was recognized by a schoolmaster. Hilder went on to study at Goldsmith’s College in London where he met his wife, the botanical illustrator Edith Blenkiron. He began building a reputation as an accomplished watercolorist of quintessential Kent landscapes, rending the sky and earth with a sensitively modulated palette. From 1964 to 1974, he served as the president of England’s Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, and in 1986 was awarded an Order of the British Empire. He died on April 21, 1993 in Greenwich, England. Artnet
